Abstract art, also called abstractionism (from Latin: abstractio - something abducted), is a kind of modernist strand in art. It is characterized by a refusal to depict objects and events, as well as a detachment from the figurative approach to reality. The aim of this direction is to achieve harmony by combining geometric shapes and colors that can cause different emotions and associations. It originated in 1910-1913 after the breakup of Cubism, Expressionism and Futurism. Free art, derived from Expressionism and the close to Cubism geometric abstraction, gave the first abstract artists a boost - Vasily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, Kazimir Malevich, Pete Mondrian and Frantisek Kupka. The greatest abstractionists, recognized today, are Kandinsky and Mondrian.
