"Farmhouses in Arles" №23968

Art. number: 23968

Description

For two months, Gauguin and Van Gogh live together in Arles. Their turbulent relationship puts an end to their friendship. This is the first painting that Gauguin painted during these months - one of Van Gogh's favorite places - the fields of Cru. The canvas is stretched by Van Gogh for him.

There is a lot of speculation about what has happened between the two, there are many books and hundreds of articles on the subject - but all admit that the truth is not known. One version of the basis of the conflict says that Van Gogh's love for Gauguin also has a purely carnal dimension. He is, however, heavily hurt that his friend, who literally flirts with him, still rejects him. Van Gogh is furious, so they fight the evening in the pub, then attack him with the razor.

Here, however, the versions are divided again. Some believe that after this scene, Gauguin leaves, and Van Gogh cuts his ear in an attack of the already maddened madness. Others say that Gauguin, stronger and more experienced in fighting, takes the razor from his friend's hands and cuts his ear, but Van Gogh conceals him because he really loves him. I do not venture to guess, but it is a fact that they never meet again in this life, even though they continue to write and later make a joint exhibition. Sometime in the meantime, however, Gauguin made the firm decision to move to Tahiti.
