Art. number: 16628

Description

Claude Monnet painted a series of oil paintings at Westminster Palace, home to the British Parliament, in the fall of 1899 and the first months of 1900 and 1901 during his stay in London. All pictures in the series have the same view of the Thames - from its window or terrace in "St. Thomas Hospita"l and approximate dimensions of a canvas of 81 cm x 92 cm. However, they are painted at different times of the day and under different climatic conditions . It begins with 44 sails, then grows to 65, but some of them destroy the artist because they do not like it. Currently, 19 pieces are known.

During the series "Suns Over the Parliament", Moeh violated his earlier practice of finishing the picture in front of the plot. He finishes the images in France. This has caused some negative reactions, but Monet's answer was that his way of creating a work is not a job and will leave people to judge the end result. Still a year later, he returned to London to finish them.
