Flowering Orchards is a series of paintings painted by Van Gogh in Arles in the spring of 1888. He arrived in Arles in February 1888 in a snowstorm. Within two weeks the weather changes and the orchards blossom. Honoring the symbolism of reincarnation, Van Gogh works with optimism and jealousy on fourteen pictures of flowering trees in the early spring. In 1889 he also made pictures of flowering trees in Saint Remy. Flowering trees are special for Van Gogh - they are a symbol of awakening and hope.
