St. George the Victorious is one of the most celebrated saints, a martyr of Christ's faith. He is also honored by the Eastern, Western Christian churches as well as in Islam. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian he was a soldier in the Roman Empire. Deceased in the myth of St. George and Lama, he is the patron of England, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Ethiopia, Canada, Catalonia, Lithuania, Portugal, Serbia, Montenegro and the cities: Beirut, Genoa, Istanbul, Ljubljana, Moscow and Freiburg .
One of the most famous miracles done by St. George, and which is often depicted on the icons as a rider killing a dragon, is the miracle that happened near Viitus, today Beirut, not far from the city of Lida where the saint's body lay.
There was a large lake near Viit, in which a terrible dragon lived. He often went out and many people became his victim. When the city walls approached, his breath was poisoned by those who were near and inhaled him. Citizens have tried to fight the beast many times but have not been successful.
When the dragon came out, St. George appeared on a white horse and went to the girl. He asked her why she was there and she was crying, and she had told him why she was there, calling for him to flee. At that hour, the saint warrior rushed to the dragon and stabbed him with his spear. Then he ordered the girl to tie the dragon with his belt and drag him to the city.
